Exotic pet emergencies

Worried about your pet? Call your vet now.

Call your usual practice first. If it is closed, follow its recorded out-of-hours instructions. Tell the team your pet's species, symptoms and when they started.

Before travelling, confirm which site to attend, whether the team can treat your species and whether registration or a referral is required. A 24-hour service does not guarantee exotic expertise or immediate admission.

Do not wait for a time threshold

Rabbit or guinea pig eating less, not eating, or passing fewer droppings: contact a vet immediately. Do not wait overnight or attempt home treatment before calling.

Breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, bleeding or serious injury: call a vet urgently and follow their instructions. If you are unsure how urgent a change is, ask the veterinary team.

Birds, reptiles and aquatic pets: describe the species and symptoms to the vet. Do not pull a bleeding feather, give medicines, use salt baths or change temperatures as a treatment without veterinary advice.

This page helps you contact care; it is not a diagnosis or treatment protocol.
